DEBUNKED: ONE GOD IN CATHOLIC THEOLOGY

A commentary.

Ive talked with assorted catholics and what i would present here is based on these interactions.

To begin with, let us define one god according to them. It is a unitary in divine essence. Three persons namely the father, son or holy spirit are considered as one god. They share the same nature, substance and essence. That makes them one god, that is, same essence. Being one god, they cannot be individualized as gods. There is only one god as there is same essence. The thought of individual gods is unmerited and invalid.

In consonance to this perspective, whenever Elohim (God) is used in OT in reference to the divine nature, it always refers to the triune god. But then, it somehow contradicts it when it say:

“Elohim (God) said, let us make man in our image…so Elohim (God) made man in his image…”

Notable in this verse is how Elohim (God) referred to himself in two category: a) as individual gods “OUR” and b) as a triune god “HIS”…

Even so, there are other verses that individualizes the father such as this:

Psalms 104:1-2
[1]Bless YHWH, O my soul. O YHWH my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.
[2]Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

We never see Jesus covered with light during his incarnation, so that verse wasnt about a triune god but an individual god called YHWH–the father.

Therefore, the triune god could be referred to as individual gods or as one composite god. This individuality can be reflected in NT verses like:

“The word was god…”

Jesus saying: “my god my god why have you forsaken me…”

This is god in individual terms. The word being god isnt triune. Jesus saying my god is in reference to an individual god–the father. It isnt triune. Therefore, for being individual gods then they are 2 gods and 1 god at the same time. 2 gods individually. And one god as composite or as Mal 2:10 emphasized is:

Echad el

Or in english is united one god.

Yet they too are an individual gods:

“The word was god…”

“My god my god why have you forsaken me…”

It is clearly manifested in this verse:

Hebrews 1:9
[9]Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

It speaks of 2 individual gods, the one who anoints and the one anointed. So clearly, God could be one god:

James 2:19
[19]Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

Or it could be, individual gods as it say:

Hebrews 1:9
[9]Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

So what is my point?

Catholics say regarding Isaiah 44:24,

“I am YHWH that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself…”

They say YHWH in the verse is the triune god. The triune god in unison have spoken and referred to themselves as one god in this manner:Myself. So it could be possible, right? The same way as the triune god Elohim referred to this unity as “His”.

So very possible, but the question is, where is the guarantee that “myself” isnt speaking of an individual god–the father. Note that the reality of 3 individual gods breaks the concept of one god as creator. Being individualized then “myself” could have possibly been speaking of an individual (the father) rather than unity–the triune god.

So how come Mal 2:10 speaks of the creator as united one god if an individual god created by himself?

For that, my answer is in this blog:

So what guarantee that “myself” is speaking of a triune god?
