CATHOLIC MYTH DEBUNKED: CALL NO MAN ON EARTH FATHER

Dennis Butic

I’ll address Winnie Ibe’s argument. I’ll paraphrase his Tagalog argument into English.
Here goes…
His central points are:

  • Calling no man father on earth as Jesus required, implied it as a hyperbole, an exagerration.
  • There are biological fathers of Christians as Jesus revealed.

Matthew 10:37 NASBS
[37] “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.”
Matthew 15:4-6 NASBS
[4] For God said, ‘Honor YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,’ and, ‘He WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.’ [5] But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God,” [6] he is not to honor his father or his mother .’ c And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. …
Matthew 19:19 NASBS
[19] Honor YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and You SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.”

  • Paul was a spiritual father.

1 Timothy 1:2 NASBS
[2] To Timothy, MY TRUE CHILD in the FAITH: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.”
1 Corinthians 4:15 NASBS
[15] For if you were to have countless tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I BECAME YOUR FATHER through THE GOSPEL.”

  • Levite’s are fathers and priests.

Judges 17:10 NASBS
[10] Micah then said to him, “Dwell with me and be a FATHER and a PRIEST to me, and I will give you ten pieces of silver a year, a suit of clothes, and your maintenance.” So the Levite went in.”
Fatherhood is from God.
Ephesians 3:15-16:
“And I bow my knees to The Father of Our Lord Yeshua The Messiah, 15Him from whom every FATHERHOOD is named, that is in Heaven and in Earth, 16That he would grant you according to the riches of his glory to be confirmed by power in his Spirit, that in your inner person, “

  • Therefore, calling noone father on earth is a hyperbole.
  • According to him, erroneous use of father is when one exalts himself high, as Jesus said would be abased such as Eli Soriano, who exalts himself as father or founder, head or master etc… This according to him is the wrong use of father.

Lets expound.
First, this is the verse in question:

Matthew 23:7-10
[7]And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
[8]But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
[9]And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
[10]Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

What does it mean?
Clearly, bec there is one Rabbi or Master and one father, it means, there are no other master or father in spiritual terms. Meaning, there is one spiritual master and father. Spiritual in the sense that contextually, god recognizes biological fathers as it say:

Hebrews 12:9
[9]Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

Therefore call no man father speaks about spiritual fathers prohibited as recognition or appellation in reference to human beings. But is not Paul recognized as spiritual father as it say:

1 Timothy 1:2 NASBS
[2] To Timothy, MY TRUE CHILD in the FAITH: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.”
1 Corinthians 4:15 NASBS
[15] For if you were to have countless tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I BECAME YOUR FATHER through THE GOSPEL.”

Wrong translation. Let’s quote KJV:

1 Corinthians 4:15
[15]For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

Paul have children in christ yet he must not be called father. Paul begot children but he must not be called father logically as jesus said, call no man father on earth. So did Paul admitted he was a spiritual father? No! What he meant was, though you have not many fathers, i am here acting or functioning as a spiritual father in begetting you but bec jesus said, call no man your father, though i acted/functioned as a father, you must not call me thus, a father.
Logically, that’s the best argument unless, jesus expressed a hyperbole but was it a hyperbole?
Is call no man father a hyperbole?
No! As there are no hyperbole in the bible as hyperbole is tantamount to lying, calling someone “good” as hyperbole for example when in fact he is not. Its lying. And where is the specific order to call catholic priests father?
He gave an example of hyperbole:

Mark 9:43
[43]And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

That is not hyperbole but a metaphor. We don’t cut our hands literally bec even thieves must use it for good.

Ephesians 4:28
[28]Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

Therefore cutting off hands is not literal. What does cutting of hands mean?

Colossians 3:5
[5]KILL therefore YOUR BODY PARTS which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

We kill or cut our body parts such as hands, eyes etc..Body parts when doing evil metaphorizes its evil act as the verse implied that idolatry is body parts i.e hands, eyes etc….Therefore, by context, when our hands steal, it metaphorizes covetousness, thus the need to cut it. Meaning, to kill the body part which are its evil works. Clearly cutting hands is cutting what it symbolizes, the evil works and not the literal hands god suggested thieves to use for good therefore by context, it is a metaphor not hyperbole.

WHY DO I BELIEVE THAT CALL NO MAN FATHER IS NOT HYPERBOLE?

Bec these words are sure word of prophecy or teaching as it say,

1 Corinthians 4:6
[6]And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.
2 Peter 1:19
[19]We have also a more sure word of prophecy (teaching); whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

Bec we must not exceed written scriptures and bec the doctrines are sure words, the sureness or certainty as the verses suggest must be found within the written scriptures. Therefore, every word in it are certain or sure, either by context or if without sure context, the words themselves as stand alone verse must necessarily be the sure word/s. Logically speaking. Therefore call no man father must be sure words either by context or by being stand alone words. Let us see where it is a sure word/s: by context?  By context, catholics say it is hyperbole but there is no direct or definite confirmation that it is hyperbole, therefore, its invalid. Without any contextual support, therefore it must be taken literally as suggested thus when it say, call no man father, it must be taken literally as call no man your spiritual father as suggested bec of the principle that doctrinally, all teachings are sure words. In short, when there is no sure word as confirmatory for a hyperbole then, it must not be taken as hyperbole, instead the words by itself are literally sure words thus call no man spiritual father is by itself sure words, as literally, as is.

2 Peter 1:19
[19]We have also a more sure word of prophecy (teaching); whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

Therefore fathers as appellation for levite priests are inapplicable to christians as appellation or name bec we must not call no man spiritual father.

How about Abraham as our father?

Romans 4:16

[16]Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

Yes! He is but logically as a father in the sense of being the promised ancestor of Christianity through Isaac through Jesus. Father in the sense of being our adoptive and surrogate and like a biological father. God the father is our adoptive spiritual father. We are adopted sons. Abraham is never our spiritual father. Bec there is one spiritual father–God almighty as Jesus said:

Call no man on earth father

Regarding Soriano as father and master, we don’t consider him as such but as head minister and founder. Founder means someone who establish or begin a group, organization etc… Soriano is a founder in the sense that he is the one that begun our particular group, MCGI. Jesus established the church including us but MCGI as a group was begun by Bro Eli. Its like this:
The Philippine basketball league 1970-2000 was founded by Mr. Brown but the Manila Bulldog team 1980 was begun by Mr Jones.

By these, it is conclusive, no christian including Paul was ever recognized as our spiritual father bec only God and Jesus are the only spiritual father of Christians.

Lastly, having no biblical doctrine as support, which sure word of god sanctioned you directly to call priests father?
